Woody Allen has courted controversy over the years with his marriage, leading to rare public date nights with his wife, but the veteran director may be courting a new level of controversy now after having something positive to say about President Donald Trump.
The director worked with Trump in the 1998 film Celebrity, and praised him for his demeanor on the set.
But while the filmmaker, who faced legal trouble in recent months, did have something kind to say about working with the President then, he also had some harsh critiques of him as well, in regards to his pivot towards politics.
Allen made his comments on an episode of Bill Maher’s podcast, Club Random.
The 89-year-old started off by admitting he was “not a Trumper,” as he recalled directing him in the project.
“He was a pleasure to work with and a very good actor,” Allen said. “He was very polite.”
After an interruption from Maher, apparently chiding him, Allen continued, saying he had a “flair for show business.”
“And hit his mark and did everything correctly and had a real flair for show business,” he continued. “I could direct him now if he would let me. If he’d let me direct him now that he’s president, I think I could do wonders. But he was very easy to work with.”
Allen further admitted he was a Democrat who had voted for Kamala Harris, before saying he was confused when Trump turned towards the political arena.

“And I take issue with him, you know, on 95 percent of the things. Maybe 99 percent. But as an actor, he was very good,” he said. “He was very convincing and very, you know, he has a charismatic quality as an actor. And I’m surprised he wanted to go into politics.”
“Politics is nothing but headaches and critical decisions and agony…Why would anyone want to suddenly have to deal with the issues of politics is beyond me. But apparently, he doesn’t mind.”
Allen has faced controversy over his marriage to his former step-daughter, Soon-Yi Previn, as well as accusations from his adopted daughter, Dylan Farrow, who has alleged numerous times that he molested her.
Allen has denied all allegations against him.
