Word and Image project seeks art and writing submissions during April

MANZANITA—The Hoffman Center for the Arts’ “Word and Image” project is open to submissions from artists and writers until the end of April. Participants must have a part-time or full-time connection to the Northern Oregon coast, be a former resident of Clatsop or Tillamook counties or visiting artists who present or instruct Hoffman workshops or demonstrations. Twelve writers and twelve artists will be selected and notified by email in late May 2026 after the selection process is complete.

The artists and writer are connected randomly at a pairing party event at the Hoffman Center for the Arts from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday June 20 and the result is a set of printed broadsides within a hard copy book, but also a display of the printed results during an exhibit at the Hoffman Center.

The project is based on the concept “Ekphrasis,” which is a Greek tradition where writers respond to artists and vice versa. According to the Hoffman Center for the Arts’ website, “the combination of word and image that are created reveal new layers of meaning and give both artists and writers the opportunity to see their art reflected in the work of another.”
