PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — It’s a stacked holiday weekend at the movies and theaters are offering something for just about everyone.
From sweeping romance to family animation to gritty crime thrillers, the box office race is shaping up to be one of the most competitive weekends of the year.
‘Wuthering Heights’ Targets Top Spot
Leading the charge is Wuthering Heights, a new adaptation of the literary classic starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi.
According to Box Office Pro, the film is projected to open between $35 and $45 million, with the potential to climb even higher if positive word of mouth builds throughout the weekend.
With romance, high drama and undeniable star power, it is clearly positioned as the go-to pick for couples looking for a Valentine’s weekend movie night.
Family Audiences Get ‘GOAT’
Sony Animation’s newest feature, GOAT, is expected to bring in between $18 and $25 million.
The animated film leans heavily into sports culture and broad family appeal, even tapping into NBA buzz tied to Stephen Curry.
With strong early reactions, this one could quietly become a surprise hit.
‘Crime 101’ Brings the Intensity
For adults looking for something more intense, Crime 101 enters the mix. The thriller stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Halle Berry.
It is tracking between $8 and $13 million. While it may not top the charts, it offers a solid alternative for moviegoers who are not in the mood for romance or animation.
Bottom line, this is one of those rare weekends where there truly is something for everyone: couples, families and thriller fans alike.
Jack’s Review: ‘Send Help’ Surprised Me
Now, to the movie I checked out this week. “Send Help”, the latest thriller from director Sam Raimi, honestly caught me off guard in the best way.
The easiest way I can describe it is that it feels like the movie Misery and the movie Cast Away had a baby.
You get that psychological tension of being trapped with someone you are not sure you can trust, mixed with that survival isolation vibe, where the characters are completely cut off from the world.
When a film spends nearly its entire runtime on an island with just two characters, it can start to feel repetitive. That never happened here.
Raimi keeps the tension tight. There is humor sprinkled in at just the right moments. Most importantly, the character dynamics carry the movie. You genuinely enjoy spending time with them, even as everything begins to spiral out of control.
This is not a massive action spectacle. It is intimate and contained, and honestly, that is what makes it work.
I had a lot of fun with this one. If you like character-driven thrillers with a survival twist, this is definitely worth checking out.
Jack’s rating: 8 out of 10.
