Yoko Ono, the widow of Beatle John Lennon, has continued to embrace her reclusive life while living out her late years in the Northeast.
The couple’s son, Sean Ono Lennon, said in a recent interview with CBS Sunday Morning that his mother is enjoying retirement in upstate New York.
“She’s slowed down a lot, and she’s retired,” Sean told CBS’ Anthony Mason. “I see her half the year.”
The Japanese artist decided to step away from the public eye and live quietly on a 600-acre farm, according to a book written by David Sheff entitled “Yoko: A Biography” that was published on March 25.
The move has helped Ono focus living out her final days “in a happy place” following decades of activism, her family said in the book.
“She believed she could change the world, and she did…now she is able to be quiet — listen to the wind and watch the sky,” daughter Kyoko said in the book while paying tribute to her mother. “This is well deserved and genuine peacefulness.”
For decades, Ono lived in The Dakota, a historic apartment building on New York’s Central Park West, in the home she shared with John Lennon. Lennon and Ono were married in 1969 and the two made headlines with their performance art and opposition to the Vietnam War.
Lennon was murdered by a disturbed fan on Dec. 8, 1980 outside The Dakota while returning from a late-night recording session. After his death, Ono founded the Strawberry Fields memorial in Manhattan’s Central Park, the Imagine Peace Tower in Iceland and the now-closed John Lennon Museum in Saitama, Japan to honor late husband.
Sean, who was five when his father died, explained how he’s now taken over his mother’s role of preserving the late Beatle’s legacy.
“That’s why I’m kind of trying to do the work she used to do,” Sean said. “I think she did a really great job for a lot of years. So she deserves to kind of sit back.”
“I’m just doing my best to help make sure that the younger generation doesn’t forget about The Beatles and John and Yoko,” Sean continued, mentioning how be believes it is possible for his father’s legacy to be forgotten. “That’s how I look at it.”
He added that he is most concerned about preserving his parents’ ongoing mantra of peace and love.
“I think that part of their legacy is incredibly important and something that I hope to convey to the younger generations,” the musician said.
