Owen Cooper, the young star at the center of the hit series “Adolescence,” just set some new records at the Emmys.
He is now the youngest male actor to win in the acting categories. He’s also the youngest actor to win the Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie.
Cooper, 15, made his screen debut in the Netflix show.
“Standing up here, wow, it’s just so surreal,” he said, accepting the award (see full video below).
“Honestly, when I started these drama classes a couple years back, I didn’t expect to be even in the United States, nevermind here,” said Cooper, who hails from Warrington, England. “But I think tonight proves that if you listen and you focus and step out your comfort zone, you can achieve anything in life. I was nothing about three years ago. I’m here now, so I think if you listen and you focus and you step out your comfort zone a little bit, who cares if you get embarrassed, you know?”
“Adolescence,” which also won the Emmy for outstanding limited or anthology series Sunday, stars Cooper as Jamie Miller, a 13-year-old boy from Northern England arrested on suspicion of murdering a teen girl from his school.
Each of the British series’ four episodes were filmed in one continuous take.

The series won a total of eight Emmys (and another for a “making-of” featurette).
Stephen Graham, who plays Jamie’s father, Eddie Miller, won the award for outstanding lead actor in a limited or anthology series or movie.
Graham also plays Bruce Springsteen’s father, Douglas “Dutch” Springsteen, in the upcoming movie “Deliver Me From Nowhere,” which filmed in The Boss’ native Jersey.
Graham and Jack Thorne, who created and wrote “Adolescence,” won the Emmy for outstanding writing for a limited series.
Erin Doherty (“The Crown”), who plays Briony Ariston, the psychologist who works on Jamie’s case, won the Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in a limited series.
And series director Philip Barantini won the Emmy for outstanding directing for a limited series.
Deadline notes that before Cooper won his Emmy, Scott Jacoby was the youngest male actor to win in the acting categories, at 16, for his performance in the TV movie “That Certain Summer” in 1973 (actor in a supporting role in a drama).
The youngest actor to win supporting actor in a limited or anthology series or movie was Michael A. Goorjian, who was 23 when he won for the TV movie “David’s Mother” in 1994.
The youngest actor overall to win an Emmy is Roxana Zal.
She was 14 when she won the award for outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie for the TV movie “Something About Amelia” in 1984.
Cooper will next appear as Young Heathcliff in the movie “Wuthering Heights.”
