However, it seems the filmmaker is now ready to embark on a new journey and work on a project that feels far more personal and grounded.
On Instagram, the filmmaker shared the first glimpse of his upcoming film, The Last Photograph, and the images make it clear that Snyder is set to depart from his usual larger-than-life spectacles. In one behind-the-scenes picture, Snyder can be seen directing actor Stuart Martin, who holds a lifeless body in his arms. Meanwhile, the second image showcases smoke swirling around him.
Snyder captioned one of the pictures as, “All you really need to make a movie is a box, a camera, and the Amazon.” The caption indicates that the movie is primarily shot in the jungles of the Amazon.
The Last Photograph has been a passion project for the aforementioned filmmaker and has been in the works since the mid-2000s. At one point, stars like Christian Bale and Sean Penn were attached to star in the movie. However, the title faced a lot of delays, and as time passed, a lot of things changed. Initially, the movie chronicled the journey of a war correspondent in Afghanistan who turned out to be the sole survivor of an attack on the American people.
But the current edition of the film is a thriller based in South America. The story follows an ex-DEA operative who re-enters the region to find his kidnapped nephew and niece. To do so, he takes the assistance of a war photographer and embarks on a journey that is filled with loss and struggle.
This seems to be a massive pivot for Snyder, who is known for movies with grand visuals and stylized action. Instead of epic battles, The Last Photograph seems to be leaning towards something more intimate. It’s a change that might reveal a more vulnerable side of the director.
