“Daily Show” host Jon Stewart on Monday night tore into President Donald Trump for launching a costly war with Iran, only to end up with the same terms that already existed in the agreement he tore up.
Over the weekend, Vice President JD Vance, who had been negotiating with Iran, announced what he called a “major milestone”: Iran agreed to allow International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors back in.
“Oh, yeah, that’s a big milestone,” Stewart sarcastically agreed. “We haven’t had nuclear inspectors in Iran since, oh, when you started bombing them last year.”
Inspectors were also allowed under the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal negotiated under President Barack Obama.
Now, after nearly four months of war, Iran is getting similar terms plus access to a $300 billion reconstruction fund.
“Well, I hope you learned your lesson, Iran,” Stewart said. “There’s plenty more concessions where that came from. You mouth off again – and you’re getting Greenland.”
Yet Vance praised the emerging agreement as “a classic Trump deal.” Stewart agreed ― but probably not for the reason Vance intended.
“Oh, it is a classic Trump deal. Announce a bold action with grandiose ambition, and then shit the bed, and then state confidently that bed shit was the goal all along,” Stewart said. “And then, finally, name the bed after Trump.”
