Fortunately for parents, this weekend’s lineup of free events is filled with music, art and sports for all ages.

Mayor’s Play Ball

The time to step up to the plate has finally come, Pembroke Pines.

The annual Mayor’s Play Ball event returns on Friday with free food, prizes and America’s Pastime catered to the city’s children.

For young players nervous about taking the field, remember, “The hard is what makes it great.”

The challenge is part of the game.

[–>

Families and players will meet at Flamingo Park, located at 1900 NW 122nd Terrace, from 10 a.m. to noon for hit, pitch and run activities alongside Mayor Angelo Castillo.

The event is co-hosted by the city’s Recreation & Cultural Arts Department and the United States Conference of Mayors.

Americana Concert

The patriotic displays continue Saturday at the Pembroke Pines Library.

The library, located at 955 NW 129th Ave., will host an hourlong afternoon concert to commemorate the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.

Music will be performed by the band “SENIOR Moments … The Unforgettable Band.” The seven-member ensemble specializes in music spanning from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Sensory Sunday

Held every second Sunday of the month at The Frank C. Ortis Art Gallery, this event is catered to the city’s neurodivergent families.

The morning is spent in a quiet and controlled space inside the gallery, meant to help guests explore their inner artist.

The event runs from 9 to 11 a.m., with hands-on art-making stations and ample space to relax, including cozy bean bags, chill zones and reduced lighting and sound.

Pembroke Pines was given an “Autism Friendly City” designation by the Center for Autism and Related Disabilities this year.

Summer Symphony Series

The South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s woodwind quintet performs from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Charles F. Dodge City Center.

It’s the second in a four-part series of shows presented in partnership with the city and the symphony.

Featured pieces include movie soundtracks, pop favorites, tango and classical masterpieces.

The quartet will play selections from “Black Panther,” “Interstellar” and “The Godfather,” along with music by Billie Eilish, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Pink, Taylor Swift and Chappell Roan.

The event is free and open to the public. The city encourages guests to arrive early as there is limited seating.
