Dear viewer,
Today we will be discussing Bacchylides’ Dithyramb 17 (circa 500 BCE). There we find a conflict between Theseus and King Minos on board a ship. Theseus takes his famous “dive” into the sea to ostensibly retrieve Mino’s golden ring and to prove to the king his favour among the Gods. Theseus emerges transformed and endowed with divine-backing. He has effectively become ready to take to his place as king. We will discuss Orphic imagery and parallels to this famous “dive”.
