Taylor Swift spoke about far more than her upcoming Eras Tour docuseries and engagement to Travis Kelce during her Late Night With Stephen Colbert interview. The star also addressed critics of her decades-long dominance in the music industry.
Swift was discussing her favorite people, citing Stevie Nicks, Kelce, and her The Life of a Showgirl collaborator, legendary producer Max Martin. She praised Martin’s own longtime success before sharing her feelings toward people who want her to “go away.”
“He’s [Martin] reinvented his sound so many times, and I think what I look up to the most in people is career longevity—career longevity, friendship longevity, longevity in their relationships,” she said. “You know, how do you keep a good thing going? I think there are certain corners of our society that really love that and look up to longevity. There are also corners that are like, ‘Give someone else a turn! Can’t you just go away so we can talk about how good you were?’ I’m like, ‘I don’t want to.’”
In October, Swift shut down speculation that she would be stepping away from music after getting married to Kelce. BBC Radio 2’s Scott Mills brought up fan theories that The Life of a Showgirl would be her last album after she sang about her dream of having a family and maintaining a more private life on her song “Wi$h Li$t.”
Swift told Mills, “That’s a shockingly offensive thing to say. It’s not why people get married, so that they can quit their jobs.”
Mills noted that some of her fans had been panicking at the idea, and she offered reassurance, stressing how supportive she and Kelce are of each other’s careers.
“Oh, I know, they love to panic sometimes,” she said. “But I love the person that I am with because he loves what I do, and he loves how much I am fulfilled by making art and making music. That’s the coolest thing about Trav: He is so passionate about what he does that me being passionate about what I do, it connects us. There’s no point in time where he’s going to be like, ‘I’m really upset that you’re still making music, the music thing that I signed up for, that I knew you loved, I thought you were going to stop doing that.’”
