Sport has never just been about the final score for our mob. It is where young people find belonging, where culture travels onto every field and court, and where the next generation learns what it means to carry community with pride. Every Aboriginal athlete who pulls on a jersey carries more than their own ambitions. They carry the footsteps of those who fought to create space and become the visible reminder for those still finding their way.
That legacy is reflected in Wiradjuri woman Thalia Uilelea, whose selection as the 2026 Canberra and District NAIDOC Sportsperson, Coach or Administrator of the Year recognises a young leader creating change well beyond the sporting arena.
At just 24, she has carved out an extraordinary path as an elite athlete, respected First Nations artist and mentor. Over the past year she earned selection in the 2026 Brumbies Women’s Squad after making the leap from high-level netball to professional rugby union, all while working full time and continuing to invest in young Aboriginal athletes finding their own pathways.
The recognition holds particular meaning because it comes from her own community.
“It means recognition from my community; it means that the hard work I do behind the scenes is appreciated by mob around me,” Ms Uilelea said.
That quiet work is what defines her contribution. While recognition has come her way, her impact has always reached much further than the scoreboard.
As a member of the inaugural Black Swans Netball team, she competed across national, state, regional and club competitions while mentoring emerging First Nations players through pathways across Queanbeyan, Tuggeranong and ACT Netball. Young Aboriginal girls have seen someone who competes at the highest level without ever leaving culture behind.
Moving into rugby only reinforced what Ms Uilelea already knew.
“Seeing representation in both sports shows me that there is culture everywhere I go, and that I can bring my culture with me thanks to those who have come before me.”
Those words speak to something many Aboriginal people understand. Whether leaving Country for study, work or sport, culture does not stay behind. It travels with you, grounding identity and reminding you where your strength comes from.
Her influence stretches well beyond competition. Through her artwork, she has helped reshape sporting spaces across the ACT and New South Wales by designing First Nations uniforms that reflect the stories of local Traditional Owners. Rather than being worn once a year for Indigenous Round, many of those designs have become permanent club uniforms, embedding culture into everyday life. She also created a permanent reconciliation mural at ACT Netball in Lyneham, leaving a visible reminder that Aboriginal culture belongs in these spaces every day.
Creating culturally safe environments remains central to everything Ms Uilelea does.
“I think having spaces reflect culture helps people, especially young athletes, feel more comfortable where they are,” she said.
“Especially if you’ve moved away from home or your community, representation creates a home away from home.”
That understanding comes from lived experience. It is about ensuring young people walking into unfamiliar spaces can still see themselves reflected, feel connected to culture and know they belong.
Despite receiving one of the highest recognitions during NAIDOC Week, she remains grounded in the people who helped shape her journey.
“My mum drove me to all my sporting comps as a kid, sat on the sidelines in the freezing cold and, even if she wasn’t physically with me, always supported me from afar,” she said.
Ms Uilelea also acknowledged those who strengthened her cultural identity along the way.
“I would also love to thank the strong Blak leaders such as my former netball coach Nat George, who always reinforced that we stand on the shoulders of our ancestors.”
Just as importantly, she drew inspiration from the young people now following similar pathways.
“And finally, all the young superstars who have come through development programs such as the First Nations Program run by the Brumbies. I am inspired by their bravery to leave family, come here and create their own communities.”
As NAIDOC celebrates 50 Years of Deadly, her story reminds us that Black excellence is built through consistency, generosity and community. It lives in the hours spent mentoring young people, creating spaces where culture is visible and showing others that success never requires leaving identity behind.
This recognition celebrates far more than sporting achievement. It acknowledges a proud Wiradjuri woman who continues to open doors, strengthen culture and show every young Aboriginal athlete coming behind her that there is a place for them to thrive exactly as they are.
