Dylan Carter, a South Carolina musician who competed on “The Voice” in 2023, has died at age 24.
WCDB News 2, a South Carolina NBC affiliate, confirmed Monday that Carter had been involved in a single-vehicle crash in Colleton County at around 11:22 p.m. on Saturday. Local law enforcement officials told People that Carter’s car had veered off the road and struck a utility before overturning, though the collision remains under investigation.
Carter was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, they said.
The Local Voice, a nonprofit group for women with cancer co-founded by Carter, honored his memory with a tribute on their Facebook page late Monday.
“Dylan was the heart of what we do. He believed every voice matters and lived that every day,” the group’s post read. “Through his music, his kindness, and his smile, he brought people together and made everyone feel seen.”
It continued: “We are heartbroken, but find comfort knowing he is in heaven with his mother. We are so grateful for Dylan, for the love he gave this community, and for the impact he leaves behind. We will carry his light forward and continue this mission in his honor.”
Carter had been slated to perform Monday evening in Moncks Corner, South Carolina as part of its “Music on Main” event. The town’s mayor, Thomas Hamilton Jr., said his family was “heartbroken” by the news.
“He was much more to our family than an entertainer,” Hamilton wrote on Facebook, “he was our friend and we are deeply saddened.”
Among those to also share their condolences was Reba McEntire, who coached Carter on Season 24 of “The Voice.”
“We will miss Dylan so much. He was a brilliant, kind and talented young man who brought a huge ray of sunshine to The Voice,” the country legend wrote on her Instagram stories, per Billboard. “Rest in peace, my dear friend.”
Carter rose to prominence at 20 years old, when he auditioned for “The Voice” with a rendition of Whitney Houston’s “I Look to You” that he dedicated to his late mother, Julie.
Shortly after his elimination from the competition series, Carter acknowledged he felt “very defeated,” but added: “It did not take me long to realize that I actually didn’t lose anything, instead I gained EVERYTHING!”
“I came to The Voice unsure of myself, unsure of my future, and still grieving the loss of my mom,” he wrote on Instagram. “I left LA with confidence in myself and my future, with a sure purpose as to why I was put on this Earth, and with peace of mind moving on from my mom’s death.”
In addition to his music career, Carter worked as a realtor and was the co-owner of Sunny Days RV & Campground, located near South Carolina’s Lake Marion.
