The 1980s changed television forever. Cable channels expanded, music television exploded, kids programming became big business, and syndicated shows created a new generation of television celebrities. Unlike the variety-show personalities of the 1970s, many of the decade’s most recognizable faces became famous through niche programming that eventually reached massive audiences.

Some hosted game shows. Others introduced music videos, entertained kids, or built entire careers on larger-than-life personas. At their peak, they seemed to be everywhere. Today, many have largely faded from mainstream conversation.

Here are 10 forgotten TV personalities of the 1980s.

1. Peter Tomarken

Why he still matters: He became one of the defining game show personalities of the decade.

As the host of Press Your Luck, Peter Tomarken helped create one of the most beloved game shows of the 1980s. The Whammies became pop culture icons, and Tomarken’s energetic hosting style perfectly matched the era’s colorful daytime television landscape.

2. Morton Downey Jr.

Why he still matters: He helped pave the way for modern tabloid television.

The Morton Downey Jr. Show turned confrontation into entertainment years before it became common. Love him or hate him, Downey changed the tone of television talk shows and became one of the most talked-about personalities of the late 1980s.

3. Nina Blackwood

Why she still matters: MTV created an entirely new kind of television celebrity.

As one of MTV’s original VJs, Nina Blackwood became a familiar face for millions of viewers during the channel’s formative years. She helped introduce audiences to countless music videos and became a defining personality of early MTV.

4. Mark Summers

Why he still matters: He became the face of a generation of kids television.

Hosting Double Dare turned Mark Summers into one of Nickelodeon’s biggest stars. The show’s messy obstacle courses, trivia questions, and gallons of slime made it one of the most memorable children’s programs of the decade.

5. Joe Franklin

Why he still matters: Local television personalities once had national influence.

Though based in New York, Joe Franklin became one of television’s most prolific interviewers. His talk shows featured thousands of guests over the years, helping preserve a uniquely old-school style of television conversation.

6. Alan Hamel

Why he still matters: Syndicated television created stars across North America.

Alan Hamel hosted numerous daytime and syndicated programs, becoming a familiar television personality throughout the 1970s and 1980s. His steady presence made him one of the era’s most recognizable hosts.

7. Bert Convy

Why he still matters: He represented the classic game show personality.

Whether hosting Super Password, Tattletales, or appearing on celebrity panels, Bert Convy embodied the polished charm that game shows relied upon during the decade.

8. Downtown Julie Brown

Why she still matters: Music television personalities became stars in their own right.

Known for her energetic style and unmistakable accent, Downtown Julie Brown became one of MTV’s most recognizable personalities during the channel’s peak years. She helped define the visual culture of late-80s music television.

9. J.D. Roth

Why he still matters: Youth-oriented television became a growing television market.

J.D. Roth became a familiar face to younger viewers as the host of Fun House, the syndicated kids game show that debuted in 1988. With its messy stunts, prizes, and bright arcade-like energy, the series helped define the late-80s shift toward louder, more kid-focused game show programming.

10. Elvira

Why she still matters: A local horror host became a national phenomenon.

Cassandra Peterson’s Elvira character transformed late-night horror hosting into a pop culture empire. Through Elvira’s Movie Macabre, guest appearances, commercials, and specials, she became one of the most recognizable television personalities of the decade.

Final Thoughts

The 1980s expanded the definition of television fame. Cable channels, kids networks, syndicated programs, and music television created opportunities for personalities who might never have become stars in previous decades.

Many of these faces were once unavoidable parts of daily television viewing. While some remain cult favorites, others have become fascinating reminders of just how different television culture used to be.
