Robert Redford was an icon 10 times over. Whether it was his incredible acting, beautiful directing, fierce activism or advancing the art of film, he was an all-time great. And as it was announced Tuesday morning, Redford died at the age of 89.
We, his fans, will have so many of his movies to cherish and remember him by. So as we mourn him, it’s a good time to round up his best roles and movies. Normally, we do these roundups as acting roles only. But for Redford, we have to include some of the movies he directed on this list of his best films.
Here they are, in no particular order:
Barefoot in the Park
His breakout before his quick ascent to stardom. The adaptation of the Neil Simon Broadway play was a winner.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
An all around amazing movie and not the last one he’d do with Paul Newman.
The Way We Were
The perfect romantic lead with Barbra Streisand.
The Sting
The other movie he did with Newman was a thrilling, jaw-dropping, brilliant film. No wonder it won Best Picture at the Oscars that year.
All the President’s Men
His Bob Woodward was a great counterbalance to Dustin Hoffman’s Carl Bernstein.
The Natural
The tributes to his Roy Hobbs are pouring in.
Out of Africa
Another Best Picture winner.
Lions for Lambs
An underrated movie that he directed and starred in.
Quiz Show
You can really see what a great director he was with this one.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
I loved his heel turn as Alexander Pierce.
Ordinary People
He won Best Director in his debut for a movie that also won Best Picture. What does that tell you?
