The ongoing shoegaze revival shows no signs of slowing down, and now we’ve got a trip-hop revival to go right along with it. 16 Underground, a newish LA band who have to be named at least partially after the Sneaker Pimps’ one hit, are part of that. 16 Underground’s members mostly come from the punk and hardcore world, but that’s not what they’re doing with this band. Instead, they’re making dizzy, sunny, brightly textured tracks with wispy vocals and breakbeat loops — tracks that sound both extremely ’90s and extremely right-now.
16 Underground got together in 2022, and they released their debut EP Drifting Deeper two years later. Today, they announce Without A Trace, the new EP that they recorded with producer Max Epstein, and they share the opening track “Glimpse Of You.” It sounds a bit like the likeminded LA band Crushed, if they committed to getting even more ethereal and including actual DJ scratches. More than that, though, it sounds like the musical equivalent of a pillow that’s somehow also a kaleidoscope. Below, check out that video, as well as the band’s clip for the title track (which came out back in October) and the EP’s tracklist.
TRACKLIST:
01 “Glimpse Of You”
02 “Angel (On the Run)”
03 “Fate”
04 “Without A Trace”
05 “Mystify”
The Without A Trace EP is out 8/14 on Sunday Drive.
