It’s rare for a sequel to outdo its predecessor — far too often, they’re basically watered-down, less good versions of the original movies. However, the following movies are exceptions to that rule, which only makes them all the more impressive.
1. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
TriStar
The original The Terminator movie is fantastic, but it was Terminator 2: Judgement Day that truly elevated the franchise. It’s not just one of the best sequels of all time, it’s one of the best movies of all time. Balancing incredible action sequences with the right amount of humor and emotion, it’s the rare kind of movie that can get your heart racing, laughter flowing, and tears spilling in abundance.
Warner Bros
Magic Mike tried to be something that just didn’t work, and Magic Mike XXL course-corrected to become what the original movie should have always been: funny, silly, sexy, female-gazey, and just plain fun. If you never experienced this movie in a cinema full of (slightly tipsy) people attracted to men, you missed out on the experience of a lifetime.
Warner Bros
Honestly, who even remembers what happened in Batman Begins? It’s The Dark Knight, the most enduring of Christopher Nolan’s trilogy, which explores the full potential of the rich, gritty world of Gotham and its heroes and villains. While the movie is amazing all around, its dark take on the Joker is particularly special, in no small part thanks to Heath Ledger’s transcendent performance.
4. Batman Returns
Warner Bros
Long before The Dark Knight, another Batman sequel improved upon its predecessor — Batman Returns, which was the follow-up to Tim Burton’s Batman. While the first movie was enjoyable, the sequel allowed Burton to take more creative control, resulting in an offering that was both darker and quirkier, with more layered characters and plenty of iconic moments.
5. Evil Dead II
Studiocanal
Evil Dead II took what was good about The Evil Dead, stripped away or minimized the bad parts, and dialed the whole thing up to 11. Shifting the series from more traditional horror to dark comedy territory, Evil Dead II is about as ridiculous — and ridiculously funny — as a movie gets. There’s a reason it’s a cult classic.
6. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Lionsgate
While the first The Hunger Games movie is a solid start to the series, its follow-up, Catching Fire, is the highlight in the franchise. Its expanded world and characters, the horrors of the games, the allegorical political themes, and Katniss and Peeta’s own journeys all feel more developed and emotionally impactful. It’s also a visual feast.
7. Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior
Kennedy Miller Entertainment
When people think of classic Mad Max, it’s The Road Warrior that comes to mind, not the original. It was The Road Warrior that truly established the derelict, post-apocalyptic version of Australia strongly associated with the franchise, and which positioned Max as the lone warrior archetype we know and love. It was also this sequel that saw director George Miller up his game with action and stunts to a thrilling degree.
8. Mad Max: Fury Road
Warner Bros
If The Road Warrior defined classic, Mad Max, Fury Road brought the series to a new generation and made it better than ever before. Mad Max: Fury Road expands the apocalyptic world and the Mad Max mythos while also utilizing modern effects and a grand scale, making for an absolutely exhilarating cinematic experience. The introduction of characters like Furiosa and Nux also adds engaging new angles to the story.
9. Before Sunset
Castle Rock Entertainment
The Before trilogy is all wonderful, but’s second movie, Before Sunset, is perhaps the best. Before Sunset takes the fantastic acting and dialogue present in the first movie and adds higher stakes, deeper emotions, and more complicated characters, as we meet them at an older age, with more life experiences that add depth to their dynamic.

10. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Marvel
The relationship between Steve Rogers and his best friend Bucky Barnes is one of the most compelling in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (just ask AO3), and the central part it plays in Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a major reason why it’s widely regarded as not just an improvement on the first Captain America movie, but the strongest one overall. The moving journeys of Steve and Bucky ground the movie, but don’t take away from the fantastic action sequences — not to mention one hell of a plot twist.
11. Thor: Ragnarok
Marvel
Thor: Ragnarok breathed new life into the Thor series and its central character, as well as the MCU as a whole. It remains one of the strongest movies in the franchise, with director Taika Waititi unleashing Chris Hemsworth’s comedic chops to excellent effect while still maintaining an underlying emotional through-line that provides much-needed balance. Plus, the supporting cast is fantastic, the visuals are stunning, and the musical cues are unforgettable.
12. Paddington 2
Studiocanal
Paddington was a surprisingly charming modern adaptation of a classic children’s book series, but its sequel, Paddington 2, was what really captured the hearts of modern audiences, both young and not-so-young (ahem). The wacky humor combines with lovely visuals and charming performances to create a heartwarming whole, while Hugh Grant totally steals the show as the villain, clearly having the time of his life.
13. Fast Five
Universal
The Fast and the Furious franchise is one of seemingly endless sequels, and audiences eat up every single one. Yet it’s the fifth instalment, Fast Five, that endures as perhaps the best of the bunch. It blew open the scale of the series, shifting focus from individuals street racing to a more archetypal team of unlikely heroes, in this case, executing a heist and all the excitement that entails. While it’s genuinely thrilling, it’s also effective in assembling a cast of characters you genuinely care about and root for.
14. Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back
Lucasfilm
The first Star Wars movie is, of course, incredible, but its sequel — now known as Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back — totally changed the game for the series and cinema in general. Featuring one of the most iconic plot twists of all time, the narrative adds complex layers to all the characters, but especially to Darth Vader, while the excellent action sequences, visuals, and score from the first movie are amped up even further.

15. Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi
Lucasfilm
It may have been divisive, but Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi is frankly still the best of the modern Star Wars movies — and one of the strongest in the whole franchise. Stunning cinematography and fight choreography make for some breathtaking and memorable scenes, and the plot feels fresh and urgent, with character arcs that are dynamic and interesting.
16. Logan
20th Century Fox
Logan takes the well-established character of Wolverine, as played by Hugh Jackman, and creates a darker, more grounded narrative for him that feels vital and refreshing. It’s a movie that shows the superhero genre at its best, and contains Jackman’s strongest performance as Wolverine, if not of his whole career. Patrick Stewart’s version of an older, unwell Charles Xavier is also incredibly moving.
17. Toy Story 3
Disney-Pixar
The Toy Story series is wonderful as a whole, but Toy Story 3 is the most emotionally impactful (of course owing, in part, to the way it builds on what came before). The narrative allows the characters, as well as the audience who have grown up with them, to mature and evolve, whilst still appealing to younger viewers who can’t fully grasp the bittersweet undercurrent at play (yet). It’s poignant and cathartic, and honestly, the perfect conclusion to the series (and perhaps should have remained as such).
