The Walt Disney Company has released the first teaser for the upcoming live-action “Moana” movie.
Australian native Catherine Lagaʻaia takes on the role of Moana, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprises his role as demigod Maui.

Several New Zealand actors are making their American film debut in this project, like John Tui, who plays Moana’s father, Chief Tui, Frankie Adams portrays her mother, Sina and Rena Owen plays Gramma Tala.
The nearly one-minute trailer was released on Monday morning as well as the film’s poster.
“In Disney’s live-action adaptation of the beloved Oscar-nominated animated adventure, Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people,” the film’s logline explained. “The film is directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Thomas Kail produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Beau Flynn, Hiram Garcia and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and executive produced by Thomas Kail, Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth and Auliʻi Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the animated features ‘Moana’ and ‘Moana 2.’”
The animated film “Moana” instantly became a classic after its 2016 release. The movie was so successful that a sequel was released in 2024.
“Moana” hits theaters July 10, 2026.
