From waterfront concerts to pop-up performances in parks, Philadelphia lives up to its title as “The Original Music City,” hosting a blockbuster slate of free summer concerts all across the city.
This June and July, local parks, churches, landmarks and more serve as the backdrop to unforgettable performances by local artists and major stars — and it won’t cost you a single penny.
Look no further than Philly’s Independence season festivities: Wawa Welcome America, the city’s free, multi-week Independence Day fest featuring loads of shows, and the One Philly Unity Concert for America, Philly’s massive July Fourth concert drawing big names — think Christina Aguilera and Jill Scott — and even bigger crowds to the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.
And there’s no shortage of other solo showcases, like University City Summer Series; full-on festivals, like Lancaster Avenue Jazz & Arts Festival; kid-centric lineups, like Kidchella at Smith Memorial Park; and all-ages fetes, like the Juneteenth Block Party at the African American Museum in Philadelphia. All you have to do is follow the music.
Pro-tip: Many of this summer’s outdoor shows are BYO-blanket-and-chair, and food trucks are often on deck with pay-what-you-wish fare.
