More than 100,000 fans unite in Los Angeles for a weekend of cosplay, community, and all things nerdy
It’s that time of the year again! The world-famous Los Angeles Convention Center is hosting its annual Los Angeles Comic Con, a grand 3-day event consisting of all things related to nerdy pop culture, lasting from September 26th – 28th.
Since its debut back in 2011, LA Comic Con has expanded exponentially every single year in sheer size and magnitude, now hosting upwards of 100,000 attendees from all over the globe who come to celebrate with fellow fans in all things regarding comic books, video games, anime, collectibles, and so much more.
It is a cherished event that has turned into a cultural icon of its own, where some of the largest entertainment studios in the world come to show love and appreciation to their fans, as well as to discuss future projects with exciting news and sneak peeks.
Esteemed franchises such as Marvel, D.C. Comics, Star Wars, WWE, Doctor Who, and many more beloved brands deliver an unforgettable experience to fans with in-depth discussions with some of the people who work behind the scenes in creating these treasured projects. Fans also have the chance to attend several fun panels that host big-name celebrities, with this year’s guests including Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World, The Mandalorian), Mike Colter (Marvel’s Luke Cage), Charlie Cox (Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again), and Matthew Lillard (Scream), among others.
But more so, the most important guests are, of course—the fans themselves. It’s no secret that the fans of these franchises can be some of the biggest, most loyal diehards of any fandom, period. They are the sole reason LA Comic Con and all the franchises celebrated there can continue to exist and thrive.
A core tradition among most fans is to partake in cosplaying, an activity where people arrive dressed up as their favorite characters with either hand-made and/or expertly-crafted costumes and outfits. It has grown into a giant subculture of its own, where people from all walks of life and all types of backgrounds come to fulfill their fantasy of turning into their favorite characters.
You will never know who’s under the mask. A lawyer? A fast food worker? Perhaps an accountant or professor? That’s the true beauty of it all—cosplaying gives fans of all calibers an avenue to live out their nerdy dreams and connect with each other, creating one of the tightest communities around.
