2026 TGMAs: ‘Fight the celebrities, not Charterhouse’

PR expert and former Charterhouse communications head, George Quaye, has pushed back against criticism directed at the organisers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards over the fashion choices made by attendees on the red carpet.

According to him, Charterhouse should not be held responsible for what individuals choose to wear to the event.

Speaking on Hitz FM, Quaye noted that much of the post-TGMA conversation had centered not on the event itself but on the red carpet looks and questioned why the organisers should be blamed for personal style decisions.

“How are you fighting organisers for what someone chooses to wear? Should organisers now stipulate a dress code for the event? How are you now blaming Charterhouse?

“Somebody said Dr. Likee dressed like he was going to the washing bay. How’s that Charterhouse’s problem? If you are uncomfortable with what people wore to the event, fight the people,” he said.

George Quaye also turned his attention to Ghana’s fashion designers, challenging them to take greater advantage of the platform the TGMAs provide rather than sitting on the sidelines and making critical comments after the fact.

“If you call yourself a fashion designer and someone has created a platform like the TGMAs for you and you know all your favourite celebs are going to be there, and you are sitting in your house passing silly comments, what did you do?” he asked.

He suggested that a simple phone call to a celebrity ahead of the event could result in significant exposure for any brand willing to invest in the moment.

“Did you pick up the phone? ‘Oh, I hear you’re going to be at the TGMAs. I have this new clothing line. If you can pass by, I’ll take your measurements. I want to do something for you. All I want in return, when you get on that red carpet, mention me. When you finish, take a few pictures, post it, tag me.’ End of story. You cannot invest in that as a fashion designer?” he said.

He further reminded the creative community of the sheer value the TGMA red carpet represented as a platform, describing it as worth millions and incomparable to any runway show a designer might find themselves on.
