The fall movie season, these days, technically begins at Cannes, the new launchpad for Academy Awards contenders and the international arthouse fare that dominates the conversation into the year. That’s where “Anora” began its journey en route to the Oscars last year. Same for “The Zone of Interest” and “Anatomy of a Fall” the year before. In other words, the time of year typically reserved for its best movies isn’t always its first stop.
Hot off a return-to-form quintessential movie summer thanks to a stacked lineup of blockbusters from “Jurassic World: Rebirth” to “Superman,” this fall will usher in hundreds more releases vying for eyeballs and awards. We’ve narrowed our list down to 54. Major themes this fall include the rise of beloved auteurs making a comeback (Noah Baumbach with “Jay Kelly,” Paul Thomas Anderson with “One Battle After Another,” Lynne Ramsay with “Die My Love,” Kathryn Bigelow with “A House of Dynamite”), as well as just how much international is here to stay (Cannes Palme d’Or winner “It Was Just an Accident” from Jafar Panahi, Oliver Laxe’s Cannes Jury Prize winner “Sirât,” the Oscar hopeful and destined sensation “Sentimental Value”).
More from IndieWire
While IndieWire’s list predominantly focuses on the independents and international releases this fall, there are a few tentpoles we’re looking forward to, though neither is an original: Jon M. Chu’s “Wicked: For Good” and James Cameron’s “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” both of which continue the narratives of their predecessors, albeit in the case of Pandora in a different biome.
Please note that this list is staff-curated and not meant to be exhaustive of every fall title, but just a sampling — there are hundreds of movies coming down the pike, after all! — of ones we’re particularly drawn to.
Wilson Chapman, Rance Collins, David Ehrlich, Kate Erbland, Alison Foreman, Jim Hemphill, Marcus Jones, Anne Thompson, and Christian Zilko contributed to this story.
