As a public figure, when there are false rumours swirling around your personal life, the standard approaches are either to outrightly deny them, or simply to ignore them.
There’s a third strategy, though, that is a lot more fun, and this is the one Megan Moroney is seemingly opting for when it comes to all the conjecture around her relationship status. Rather than making any serious comments on the fan-driven speculation that has tied her in recent months to Riley Green and Morgan Wallen, Moroney continues to – hilariously – make light of all the TikTok sleuthing.
The latest instance of this can be found in the Georgia native’s newly updated Emo Cowgirl Summer playlist on Apple Music, which has been revamped as part of the platform’s popular Summertime Sounds series. It kicks off with a stellar choice, Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Manchild’, but it’s the second song on this list that is intriguing.
At No. 2 you’ll see ‘TN’ by Morgan Wallen, one of the many stand-outs from the Sneedville megastar’s new album, I’m the Problem. It’s undoubtedly a strong choice, with Wallen’s sinuous, charismatic vocals snaking across the bittersweet instrumental.
It’s also a song fans are convinced was written with Megan Moroney in mind. The two artists supposedly had a fling a few years back, which then inspired Moroney’s break-out single, ‘Tennessee Orange’, which tells the story of a star-crossed romance between a Tennessee Volunteers fan and a rival Georgia Bulldog’s supporter.
Moroney is a Bulldog and Wallen is a loyal Volunteer, and in the lead-up to ‘Tennessee Orange’s release there was a playful back-and-forth between the two singer-songwriters via Instagram, as they joked that Moroney had stolen Wallen’s Vols jersey.
Since then, Moroney has appeared on the Call Her Daddy podcast with Alex Cooper to clarify that “it was never a relationship”, but did appear to confirm there was a fling.
‘Tennessee Orange’ dropped almost three years ago, and speculation about Megan Moroney’s dating life has more recently revolved around Riley Green. Nonetheless, fans are convinced that Moroney and Morgan Wallen are still writing about each other.
You can dive as deep as you want into the rabbit-hole of theories about all the songs Moroney and Wallen may have referenced one another in (we broke it all down here for you).
But the most prominent fan-theory related to this in recent months has been that ‘TN’ is all about Moroney, with TikTok flooded with montages of the song playing in the background of clips featuring the ’Six Months Later’ hitmaker. ‘TN’ finds Wallen regaling listeners with the tale of a break-up, as he laments losing a girl and wondering where she is now. Aside from the obvious ties to the ’Tennessee Orange’ narrative, ‘TN’ features an array of rumoured Moroney-related easter eggs. Among others, the line “There ain’t enough sad songs down in Nashville” is theorised to be a nod to Moroney’s track, ‘Sad Songs for Sad People’, while Wallen also describes his love interest in ’TN’ as calling ‘GA’ – Georgia – home.
In June, Megan Moroney’s best friend, Natalie King, shared a TikTok with ’TN’ as the soundtrack, which immediately sent fans into a frenzy at the prospect of this being a clue as to whether the song is about Moroney. Unlike many songs on I’m the Problem, ‘TN’ was co-written by Wallen, which fans use to add weight to their argument.
Of course, we don’t know – and probably won’t ever know – if ‘TN’ was really written about Megan Moroney. We think Moroney and King are most likely just fans of the addictive song. But we applaud the way in which Moroney is poking fun at all the conjecture and speculation by putting ‘TN’ so prominently in her new Emo Cowgirl Summer playlist. After all, it’s none of our business what went down between Moroney and Wallen, so why not have some fun and toy with fans in this way.
