At 76, rock and country legend Henry Paul is looking back on a life that’s been anything but quiet.

The singer, songwriter and founding member of The Outlaws, The Henry Paul Band and the chart-topping country trio Blackhawk has released a memoir, The Last Outlaw, offering fans an inside look into his five decades in music.

The Last Outlaw follows Paul’s rise from his childhood on a farm in the Hudson Valley region in New York to becoming one of the most influential voices in Southern rock and country.

Co-written with author Gary Hertz and a foreword by Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton, The Last Outlaw recounts the 76-year-old musician’s journey from folksinger to a co-founder of three bands. The memoir, which was released on Sept. 9, also commemorates the 50th anniversary of The Outlaws’ self-titled debut album release.

Formed in Tampa in 1967, The Outlaws quickly carved out their reputation as pioneers of the Southern Rock movement. Though they were successful and toured with many huge bands such as The Allman Brothers, The Who and The Rolling Stones, Paul was asked to leave in 1977 due to creative differences between the other members. The band reunited in 2005 and has been releasing music and performing on and off since, with their most recent album, Alive in America, released in 2022.

Within a year of leaving The Outlaws in the 1970s, Paul founded the Henry Paul Band, which included himself, Billy Crain, Jim Fish, Monte Yoho, Wally Dentz and Bill Hoffman. They released four studio albums in the span of four years: Grey Ghost (1979), Feel The Heat (1980), Anytime (1981) and Henry Paul (1982) under Atlantic Records.

In the 1990s, Paul co-founded country group Blackhawk with Dave Robbins and Van Stephenson. Their first three studio albums sold over seven million copies, but then tragedy struck when Stephenson left the band in 2000 and passed away a year later due to cancer.

Today, Paul has kept both Blackhawk and The Outlaws alive while also overseeing a successful cancer foundation in Stephenson’s name. The musician will simultaneously be going on tour with both Blackhawk and The Outlaws around the United States this October and November, with stops in New Jersey, Texas, Idaho, Washington, California, Nevada, Kentucky, Illinois and Michigan.

Fans can purchaseThe Last Outlaw now on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or their local bookstore.
