Clint Black is reflecting on making history with his debut album Killin’ Time, and the full-circle connection it gave him to country legend Hank Williams Sr. At 63, Black sat down with The Bobbycast host Bobby Bones.
Black, whose last new album was 2020’s Out of Sane, is set to tour in 2026. Talking with the Nashville‑based Bones, he got real about what it felt like to have his first two singles land at No. 1 and No. 2 on the charts, approaching the feat with his humble humor.
When asked about following up his June 1989 debut single “A Better Man” with “Killin’ Time”—his first No. 1—Black reflected:
“it was stepping off already on the 1st floor so “Killin’ Time” shot up there. “Better Man” and “Killin’ Time” were the number one and two singles of the year, which hadn’t happened in 34 years—the last time was Hank Sr. with “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and “Kaw-Liga.”
Clint Black’s Historical Connection to Hank Williams Sr.
While still in awe of the accomplishment, Black’s personal connection to Hank Williams Sr. made his debut singles’ success even more meaningful. He said he performed “Your Cheatin’ Heart” “a million times” in bars:
“I had a historical connection to, you know, one of the greatest country artist-songwriters of all time, and I felt it.”
Awards and Accolades for Clint Black
Black may marvel at sharing country music stats with a legend like Hank Williams Sr., but he has become a legend in his own right. The Texas native has released 14 studio albums, eight compilation albums, one live album, and one EP.
Clint Black has sold over 20 million albums worldwide and scored 22 No. 1 singles. With Grammy Awards, CMAs, ACMs, AMAs, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he remains one of modern country’s most celebrated artists.
Back on the Blacktop Tour
Following the success of his 2024 sold-out 35 Years of Killin’ Time world tour, Black hit the road again in 2025 on a tour celebrating his full catalog, including “Killin’ Time” and “A Better Man.”
His Back on the Blacktop Tour continues through 2026.
