Leah Remini is reflecting on her hit ’90s/2000s sitcom,The King of Queens, which premiered 27 years ago.
While Remini, now 55, is perhaps best known for speaking out (and speaking strongly against) the Church of Scientology she grew up in, it was The King of Queens that gave the actress her breakthrough role as Carrie Heffernan — wife of Kevin James’ titular Doug Heffernan — whose thick New York accent and sarcastic demeanor instantly endeared her to viewers.
In addition to starring alongside James, the actors were also joined on-screen by iconic comedian Jerry Stiller, who played Carrie’s dad, Arthur. (Stiller, who was the real-life father of Ben Stiller, also portrayed George Constanza’s dad on Seinfeld in the ’90s.)
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, September 29, Remini shared a throwback King of Queens promo photo of her, James and the late Stiller, who died in 2020 at the age of 92.
“It’s been 27 years since The King of Queens premiered, and I still get so many messages every single day from fans who tell me that our show is still a part of their daily lives,” she wrote. “I am so grateful. Thank you for 27 years of amazing memories.”
Why Won’t There Be a ‘King of Queens’ Reboot?
Both Remini and James — who reunited in the 2016 sitcom Kevin Can Wait — were outspoken about their hesitancy to do a reboot of The King of Queens without Stiller. (James, for his part, blatantly — and repeatedly — stated he couldn’t do the show without the iconic comedian.)
In June, when asked about a potential reboot of the series, Remini told Us Weekly that she would “consider it,” though “it would be hard to do a show like that without Jerry Stiller. They’d have to think of something to represent him.”
James, meanwhile, shared on Today in 2024 that they “cannot do it” because of Stiller’s death. “How do you do that without Jerry?” he asked. “He was amazing.”
He reiterated the statement to The celebrity.land: “They were asking me about reviving King of Queens and I don’t think that’s possible because a third of that big core cast is gone,” he said, referring to Stiller, whom he called “an amazing part of the show.”
“To me,” James said, “it would be hard to do it without him, and I don’t know how that would work.”
