Jane Morgan, who achieved a lengthy career as a singer, Broadway performer and television actress, died on Monday.
Morgan, who was born Florence Catherine Currier on May 3, 1924 in Newton, Massachusetts, was 101. Her family confirmed the news of her passing.
“Our beloved Jane passed away peacefully in her sleep,” Morgan’s family said in a statement to Deadline.
Morgan got her start as a nightclub singer in Paris and eventually achieved success in the UK and United States, producing six gold records. She was a frequent presence on popular variety shows in the 1950s and 1960s, holding the record for most appearances by a female singer on The Ed Sullivan Show with 50.
“Beautiful, talented and devoted- these are just some of the adjectives used to describe Jane Morgan,” reads her Hollywood Walk of Fame bio.
Morgan released her first album “The American Girl From Paris,” in 1956. Her most famous song, “Fascination,” debuted in 1957 and peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard charts while appearing in the Audrey Hepburn movie Love in the Afternoon.
Some of Morgan’s other popular songs included “The Day the Rains Came,” “With Open Arms,” “In Jerusalem,” “Bless ‘Em All,” and “Elusive Butterfly.”
Jane Morgan was a Broadway fixture
Morgan wasn’t just a singer; she also earned acclaim as an actress and Broadway performer.
Over the years, Morgan had major roles in shows such as Ziegfeld Follies of 1957, The Jack Benny Show, Mame, Can-Can, The King and I, Kiss Me, Kate, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and others.
“Being on Broadway was one of the most exciting things in my life because I had always dreamed of it,” Morgan said in 2000, via The Hollywood Reporter.
Morgan also had a long TV career
In addition to her 50 appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, Morgan performed at The Oscars twice and was regularly featured on other well-known television shows throughout her career.
Her credits include The Victor Borge Show, The Jimmy Dean Show and The Mike Douglas Show, several appearances on The Bell Telephone Hour concert series and three of her own television specials.
Away from the screen and stage, Morgan was married twice, to Larry Stith from 1959 to 1964 and to American film producer Jerry Weintraub, who was her talent agent, from 1965 until they separated in the 1980s.
Pre-deceased by Weintraub and one of their children, Morgan is survived by a son, two daughters, six grandchildren and eight grandchildren.
