“Exotic Coiffure”, 48″ x 30″ Acrylic, by James Threalkill, is part of his exhibition at the Customs House Museum in Clarksville.

Our 2025 summer is rolling to its inevitable conclusion in little over a month, with the Autumnal equinox set for Monday, September 22. As we enjoy one more big holiday weekend, Labor Day, and the final art crawls of the summer, August offers more than a few tantalizing events to enjoy before pulling out the fall wardrobe. Among them are a James Threalkill exhibition in Clarksville, the final Frist Friday of the summer, and a free concert sponsored by Nashville Jazz Workshop.

“A Kaleidoscope of Texture: Art of James Threalkill” opened in the Crouch Gallery of the Customs House Museum, located at 200 South 2nd St, Clarksville, Tennessee 37040 with an opening reception on August 7. James says this is “my largest exhibition of new work in the last 10 years.” Come see the 21 phenomenal works, on view through October 26, 2025.

As an artist, James Threalkill strives to produce high – quality fine artwork that is bound to leave a lasting impression. His art reveals three-dimensional textures and vibrant colors that attract viewers to the intensity and depth of each piece. Threalkill aspires to promote positive and inspirational images that celebrate life, culture, and cultural character which is representative of the profound legacy that is the foundation of existence.

Friday evening, August 22, savor the last sips of summer Mediterranean style set amid Venice and the Ottoman Empire at the Frist Art Museum. Break out your breeziest coastal chic looks and come dance, mingle, and make art at Frist Friday. DJ Amy Darling will be spinning tunes all night in the lobby, and you can also enjoy a special performance by lutenist Francis Perry in the Venice and the Ottoman Empire exhibition, featuring period music that brings the exhibition to life.

Stroll through the galleries and join one of their Art Chats where Frist staff and community experts will lead lively conversations about the exhibitions. You can also join a scavenger hunt for hidden gems in the shows — complete the hunt for a small prize, and be entered to win a Frist membership. Throughout the evening, artist Mandy B. will be stationed outside ArtQuest creating personalized watercolor portraits for a take – home keepsake. Café Cheeserie opens early at 6:00 p.m. and will feature live music and themed menu items until 9:00 p.m. Tickets are only $30 for General Admission; and $15 for Frist members. Advanced tickets are required. All sales final / no refunds.

Thursday, August 28, Nashville Jazz Workshop invites you to bring a friend and your favorite beverage, and enjoy a free concert by Hammond Organ Artist Johnathan Smith and his all – star band as part of their Jazz on Buchanan summer series. Jazz on Buchanan: Johnathan Smith runs from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at 1012 Buchanan Street, Nashville, TN, 37208. Johnathan Smith, currently the keyboardist for Brothers Osborne, says his ultimate goal as a musician is “to make people happy!” Smith certainly achieves this goal and so much more every time he graces a stage or studio with his consistently energetic, emotionally charged style of finessing his instrument. He has played in many bands and for many artists, and when he isn’t on the road as a band member for artist Hunter Hayes, playing keyboards and singing background vocals, he is a studio session musician and plays with local Nashville bands including his own local band J. Smith and Great Vibes. He is also the organ / keyboard player and one of the musical directors of Judah Temple of Praise Ministries of Nashville.
