Nationals Edge Royals 8-7 in Thrilling Finish

Daylen Lile singled with two outs in the ninth inning to drive in Luis Garcia Jr., lifting the Washington Nationals to an 8-7 victory over the Kansas City Royals on August 13, 2025, at Kauffman Stadium. The win improved the Nationals to 48-72, last in the National League East, while the Royals fell to 60-61, third in the American League Central. Nathaniel Lowe’s first-inning grand slam powered Washington’s early lead, but Kansas City rallied to tie before Lile’s clutch hit sealed the series finale for the visitors.

The Nationals exploded for five runs in the first against Royals starter Seth Lugo. James Wood singled and stole second, CJ Abrams walked, and Garcia doubled before Josh Bell walked to load the bases. Lowe then crushed a grand slam to right field, his 16th home run of the season, scoring Wood, Garcia and Bell for a 4-0 lead. Lile followed with a single, and Drew Millas doubled him home to make it 5-0.

Kansas City responded in the bottom half. Mike Yastrzemski and Bobby Witt Jr. walked, and Vinnie Pasquantino grounded out to score Yastrzemski. Maikel Garcia singled, and Adam Frazier’s single plated Witt, cutting the deficit to 5-2. In the second, John Rave singled and Kyle Isbel walked before Witt’s single scored Rave, making it 5-3.

Washington extended the lead in the third. Lile singled and Millas walked, then Brady House singled to score Lile for a 6-3 advantage. Abrams added a solo home run in the fourth, his 16th, pushing the score to 7-3.

The Royals clawed back in the fourth. Yastrzemski walked, Witt was hit by a pitch, and Pasquantino launched a three-run homer to right, his 22nd, narrowing it to 7-6. The game stayed tight until the eighth, when Isbel singled, stole second and third as pinch-runner Tyler Tolbert, and scored on Witt’s sacrifice fly to tie it at 7-7.

In the ninth, Garcia doubled off Royals reliever Carlos Estevez, Bell walked, and Lowe singled Garcia to third. Lile then lined a single to right, scoring Garcia for the 8-7 lead. Jose Ferrer pitched a scoreless ninth for Washington, earning the win and improving to 4-3 with a 4.68 ERA. Estevez took the loss, dropping to 4-5 with a 2.92 ERA.

Lowe finished 1-for-3 with the grand slam and four RBIs, boosting his average to .216. Lile went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, including the game-winner. Abrams contributed a home run and an RBI in a 1-for-4 effort. For the Royals, Pasquantino drove in four runs with his homer and double, going 2-for-5. Witt had two hits and two RBIs, while Frazier added an RBI single.

Starter Jake Irvin lasted four innings for the Nationals, allowing six runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Lugo went four innings for Kansas City, yielding seven runs on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. Both bullpens featured multiple arms, with Washington’s relievers combining for five innings and one run, and Kansas City’s allowing one run over five innings.

The Nationals committed no errors, turning two double plays, while the Royals had one fielding error by Witt. Washington left eight on base and went 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position; Kansas City stranded 11 and was 4-for-17 in those situations.

This road win provides a boost for the rebuilding Nationals, who have leaned on young talent amid a challenging 2025 season. Prospects like Wood, batting .261 with 15 stolen bases, and Abrams, with 16 homers and 47 RBIs, highlight the team’s future. Lowe, acquired in an offseason trade, delivered his first grand slam as a National, a milestone in his integration into the lineup.

The Royals, aiming for a wild-card spot, saw their rally fall short, dropping them further in the standings. Pasquantino’s five RBIs in the game underscored his role as a key offensive contributor, with 80 RBIs on the year. Witt continues to shine, batting .288 with 67 RBIs.

In the broader 2025 context, the Nationals sit 24 games back in the NL East, focusing on player growth after a 71-91 record in 2024. The Royals, at .500 before the loss, remain in contention, three games out of the AL wild card. The game drew 13,669 fans under sunny skies with 83-degree temperatures and light winds.
