Why Morgan Wallen won’t submit ‘I’m the Problem’ for Grammy Awards

Effectively saying, “You can’t snub me. I quit!” Morgan Wallen won’t submit his latest album, I’m the Problem, for Grammys consideration.

The move comes as the album currently sits at number one atop the Billboard 200 album charts — where it has been for ten non-consecutive weeks — and Wallen’s song with Tate McCrae “What I Want” occupies the third spot on the Hot 100.

There’s very little question that Wallen is one of the biggest recording artists working today and perhaps at the peak of his popularity. So what gives?

While there hasn’t been an official explanation from Wallen’s camp, his recent awards history paints a picture.

Or, more accurately, “lack of awards” history.

His problem with awards bodies goes back to 2021, when Wallen was caught on camera using a racial slur. The incident led to the singer apologizing, checking into rehab, and getting a one-year ban on individual honors from both the Academy of Country Music Awards and the Country Music Association Awards.

The Grammys didn’t impose any official sanctions, but he failed to receive any nominations from 2021’s massive Dangerous: The Double Album. In fact, Wallen has never secured any nominations outside of his featured work on the Post Malone song, “I Had Some Help.” That track earned Wallen his only two ever Grammy nods — for Country Song and Country Duo/Group Performance.

Non-submission following a perceived under-nomination is a pattern we’ve seen recently at the Grammys. Both the Weeknd and Drake withdrew from consideration after taking issue with nominations.

The Weeknd publicly blasted the Recording Academy in 2021 after “Blinding Lights” and his album After Hours failed to received any nominations. He boycotted the awards afterward, but seemingly made amends with the Academy, appearing during the 2025 telecast.

Drake withdrew Certified Lover Boy from consideration after receiving a nomination for Best Rap Album in 2021, but subsequently submitted Her Loss in 2023.
