Lil Nas X reflected on a “pretty difficult” past few years in a video shared via social media in February, six months before his arrest for allegedly assaulting a police officer.
“These last few years were pretty difficult for me,” he said in the video. “I’m just now arriving to this place of feeling confidence in myself and what I’m doing, and I’m trying to make sure I put intention towards my music and my vision and the creativity of it all.”
“Most of all, I really want to make sure I have fun this time around,” Lil Nas X, 26, continued, saying he didn’t have as much fun during the rollout of his 2021 album, Montero.
“I was more focused on making sure the songs did well than making sure I was having fun doing s***,” he explained. “And I’m not saying I didn’t have any fun. I had some f***ing fun. But I want this time around to be even more fun and I want to be even more full of joy and I want to be even more full of love.”
The rapper was hospitalized in the early morning hours of Thursday, August 21, after witnesses claimed to have seen him roaming the streets of Los Angeles in his underwear. Upon his release from the hospital, he was arrested and booked on a misdemeanor charge.
Footage of the incident, which has since gone viral, shows the “Old Town Road” artist placing a traffic cone over his head while muttering about going to a party.
According to police, Lil Nas X, whose real name is Montero Lamar Hill, tried to “batter an officer” once police arrived at the scene, “so he was booked for battery of a [peace officer].”

Lil Nas X was also hospitalized in April, sharing a video via Instagram from his hospital bed, where he said he was suffering from facial paralysis.
“This is me doing a full smile right now by the way,” he said in the since-deleted video as he displayed a crooked smile. “It’s like what the f***. Bro, I can’t even laugh right, bro. What the f***. Ah! Oh my God.”
He has also been open in the past about his family’s history with addiction and his own marijuana use.
“So much happened during my rise,” he told Variety in 2020. “You know, drugs and murders. And my grandmother passing [in 2018] — she was the first person close to me who died. It was devastating. And it made me a hypochondriac: I’d wake up, heart racing. It was scary.”
