Director Jake Schreier on How Thunderbolts* Influences New MCU Movie

Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier has shared an update about his new X-Men movie.

After directing Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*, Schreier has been tapped to direct a new X-Men movie. The MCU film is not expected to arrive until after Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, and no casting has yet been announced.

What did Jake Schreier say about the X-Men movie?

Speaking with Empire Magazine, Schreier confirmed that he’s started working on X-Men for Marvel. While he couldn’t give away any specific details about the project, he called it “very, very exciting.”

He further said about how directing Thunderbolts* will influence X-Men, “There are so many things that I didn’t know about before I started [Thunderbolts*]. The biggest learning curve for me was the proportion of the action to the more emotional, character-driven scenes, and how, even though it’s more shooting days than I’ve ever had, they get eaten up quite quickly by the action stuff. By the time we got to the end of it, it felt like, ‘Oh, now I feel like we get how to do this a little bit better.’

“…[On Thunderbolts*] we’re in the middle of nowhere in Utah, in a gorgeous location, owning a road, and filming in 100-degree heat, or finding yourself on the second-tallest building in the world. These are very special experiences.”

Marvel’s new X-Men movie does not yet have an official release date. Thunderbolts*, meanwhile, arrives on Disney+ on August 27, 2025.

“Marvel Studios assembles an unconventional team of antiheroes with Yelena Belova, Bucky Barnes, Red Guardian, Ghost, Taskmaster, and John Walker,” the synopsis for Thunderbolts* reads. “After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, these disillusioned castoffs must embark on a dangerous mission. Forced to confront the darkest corners of their pasts, will this dysfunctional group tear themselves apart, or find redemption and unite before it’s too late?”
