News of Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s internet-breaking engagement has officially hit the White House.
While taking questions during a public cabinet meeting on Tuesday, August 26, President Donald Trump reacted to the news that the pop star and Kansas City Chiefs tight end were officially, after two years of dating, planning a trip down the wedding aisle.
“Well, I wish them a lot of luck,” Trump, 79, said after he was asked to weigh in on the news by a reporter, per footage shared by CSPAN and various media outlets. “No, I think he’s a great player. I think he’s a great guy. And I think that she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck.”
Swift and Kelce announced the joyous news in a joint Instagram post on Tuesday, sharing photos of Kelce’s garden proposal and Swift’s massive old mine brilliant cut diamond engagement ring. (The ring, set on a gold band featuring additional small stones, was designed by Kindred Lubeck at Artifex Fine Jewelry.)
“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” the pair captioned the post, which was set to Swift’s song “So High School,” which is about her romance with her now-fiancé.
While Trump had nothing but positive things to say about the pair’s engagement, he has publicly insulted Swift in the past. Just earlier this month, Trump attacked Swift via his social media app, Truth Social, comparing her to Sydney Sweeney in the wake of her American Eagle ad controversy.

“Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there. It’s for American Eagle, and the jeans are ‘flying off the shelves.’ Go get ‘em Sydney!” he said in part on August 4, before calling Swift “no longer hot” since he supposedly declared he hated her. (Swift, meanwhile, has continued to break numerous records in recent years, including with her Eras Tour bringing in more than $2 billion.)

After Swift endorsed Trump’s 2024 presidential election rival, former Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump attacked Swift online, posting “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!” on Truth Social.
In May, Trump again threw insults at Swift, writing, “Has anyone noticed that, since I said ‘I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT,’ she’s no longer ‘HOT?’”
Despite his previous comments, and perhaps as a reaction to his low approval rating, Trump has decided to, as celebrity.land’s Brianna Keilar commented on Tuesday, “take the high road” and send nothing but well wishes to the happy couple.
