Prime Video’s Upload has officially closed its digital doors with Season 4, leaving no plans for a Season 5. The sci-fi dramedy from Greg Daniels ran from 2020 to 2025, making one of the top hits for the streaming platform. While fans hoped Upload might continue, both Daniels and Amazon had mapped out its ending long before.
Why Prime Video ended Upload before Season 5
Greg Daniels revealed that Upload was always structured as a four-season story. When the series was renewed for its final season, he explained that he had mapped the plot from the beginning. He wanted it to wrap up after four chapters. Instead of stretching the show endlessly, Daniels focused on telling a complete arc. The arc was for Nathan, Nora, and the world of Lakeview.
“When I conceived Upload many years ago, I had the story arc out over four seasons, so I am thrilled to make the ending the fans deserve and the characters and creative team have been working towards,” said Greg Daniels. (via Deadlines)
Furthermore, Upload Season 4’s reduced episode count surprised fans, but Robbie Amell reassured viewers that the creative team treated it as a true ending. He admitted that having only four episodes felt “sad,” but he stressed that Greg Daniels wrote the finale as a proper conclusion, not as a cliffhanger. The writers themselves debated pulling off an ambiguous Upload ending similar to Inception’s spinning top. In the end, they agreed, “We knew we couldn’t end on a cliffhanger, and there had to be a beginning, middle, and end. Now, with no Upload Season 5 on the horizon but fans are still looking for a similar vision. Greg Daniels’ new series The Paper, a spinoff of The Office, will premiere on September 4. He’s also bringing back the animated classic King of the Hill. For viewers, all four seasons of Upload remain available on Prime Video.
