’90s Actor Jeff Goldblum, 72 Reveals His Unexpected Song of the Summer

Jeff Goldblum’s song of the summer? Let’s just say it might not be something you’d expect.

The idea of a “Song of the Summer” has always been up for debate. It’s the track that seems to follow you everywhere, from pool parties to your TikTok For You Page to always playing on the radio. This year, many claim that there is still no song of the summer.

Some years, the choice feels obvious. For instance, last summer, many agreed that it was either “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso,” or “BIRDS OF A FEATHER” by Billie Eilish that deserved the title. But Post Malone’s “I Had Some Help,” featuring Morgan Wallen, was the official Song of the Summer in 2024, according to Billboard.

The lack of a clear frontrunner hasn’t stopped people from weighing in.

On Friday, Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli, the hosts of the New York Times’ music and pop culture podcast, Popcast, asked 10 different actors, musicians, politicians and cultural figures what they think this year’s “Song of the Summer” is.

Jeff Goldblum, a popular actor who started his career in the 1980s and gained mainstream popularity by the 1990s, revealed that his song of the summer is “Lover Girl” by Laufey.

“I can’t stop listening to it. It kind of reminds me of those ’60s bossa nova things I was enchanted with, with Jobim and Stan Getz,” the 72-year-old actor revealed. “[The song] has flute and saxophone. It’s like that, but it’s a new twist on it.”

Laufey is a Gen Z favorite known for blending the genres of pop, jazz, classical and bossa nova throughout her discography. Born and raised in Iceland, she first gained recognition in 2020 with her song “Street by Street.” In 2021, she released her debut album, Everything I Know About Love, then her second album, Bewitched, in 2023, which won her the Grammy Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. She has stated in various interviews that she draws inspiration from artists such as Norah Jones, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Taylor Swift, Adele and Chet Baker.

“Lover Girl,” the second track on the 26-year-old singer’s newest album A Matter of Time, captures the feeling of missing your significant other. Released as the album’s third single ahead of the full record, which dropped last Friday, the song has been a fan favorite.

He released a jazz album of his own in April titled Still Blooming with The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra and is playing The Wizard in the Wicked movies. The second part, Wicked: For Good, comes out in theaters in November.
