Kim Novak appeared virtually unrecognizable during her recent appearance at the Venice Film Festival.
The 92-year-old actress received the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement at the prestigious annual event for her documentary.
Her work – titled Kim Novak’s Vertigo – features the Hollywood legend reflecting on her difficult childhood and chronicles her starring role in Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo before she abandoned celebrity life and relocated to Oregon, where she currently leads a secluded existence.
During her 2014 Oscars appearance, Kim faced harsh criticism regarding her altered appearance and became the target of countless cruel social media posts about her noticeably swollen facial features. She subsequently confessed to having undergone facial fat injections.
Following the backlash, Kim released a public statement, “After my appearance on the Oscars this year, I read all the jabs. I know what Donald Trump and others said, and I’m not going to deny that I had fat injections in my face.
“They seemed far less invasive than a facelift. It was done in 2012 for the TCM interview special. In my opinion, a person has a right to look as good as they can, and I feel better when I look better.”, reports the Mirror.
Her documentary traces the journey of a young woman raised during Depression-era Chicago. It captures her decade of Hollywood stardom and her eventual choice to withdraw from the film industry.
“I have been feeling the need to free the memories that have been hiding in the closet of my mind,” she explained when questioned about her motivation for creating the documentary and examining her past. In the documentary, Kim recounts her traumatic childhood experiences.
She shared,”The Depression caused so much hardship. My mother got pregnant and she could not afford a child.
“She tried to abort me with knitting needles and it failed. So she tried to suffocate me with a pillow. I remember fighting to stay alive. I won, I stayed alive, and made it through.”
Her sister tragically discovered her brother’s fetus in the basement of their home, stored alongside their father’s collection of animals and insects.
Documentary filmmaker Alexandre Phillippe, upon hearing Kim’s stories for the first time, expressed, “I gasped, and said, is it too dark? It is a privilege to share all these very powerful secrets and memories.”
Kim also reflected on how her father was unsupportive of her fame and never expressed pride in her accomplishments. She added that he rarely attended the premieres of her films, which catapulted her to stardom.
