The Mesilla Valley Film Society will present a special screening of “The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Fountain Theatre, 2469 Calle de Guadalupe in Mesilla.
The 1994 cult classic stars Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp, who died Aug. 17 at age 87. The film follows two drag performers and a transgender woman as they journey across the Australian Outback in a glitter-covered bus. Critics hailed it for its exuberant style and groundbreaking representation, “Priscilla” became an unexpected international hit and helped bring LGBTQ+ stories into the mainstream of culture.
Stamp earned critical praise for his portrayal of Bernadette, a transgender woman navigating life with dignity and quiet strength. Known to many for his role as General Zod in the Superman films, Stamp’s career spanned six decades, including acclaimed performances in “Billy Budd,” “Far from the Madding Crowd,” “The Limey” and “The Adjustment Bureau.” His role in “Priscilla” remains one of his most widely admired.
Tickets are available at mesillavalleyfilm.org and at the door. The Mesilla Valley Film Society has been showcasing independent and international films at the Fountain Theatre since 1989, supported by volunteers and community sponsors.
