Penn Badgley has shared his cherished moments with late ‘Gossip Girl’ co-star Michelle Trachtenberg, describing her passing at the young age of 39 as “surreal,” with the emotional interview coming just after her fans fumed that she was left out of a key Oscars segment.
At the premiere of ‘You’ Season 5 in New York City’s Plaza Hotel, the 38-year-old actor revealed that it had been more than ten years since he last saw Michelle, whose death also saw a touching tribute from co-star Blake Lively. Despite the time apart, he warmly remembered her, noting she had “a pure heart.
This heartfelt tribute came shortly after the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office disclosed that the ‘Harriet the Spy’ actress succumbed to complications from diabetes mellitus, classifying her death as natural. Meanwhile, after Matthew Perry’s death, Trachtenberg feared she would “die young too.”
The medical examiner further clarified that no autopsy was conducted, but a toxicology test was performed, offering deeper understanding into the circumstances of Michelle’s untimely demise. She was discovered deceased in her Upper West Side residence on February 26.
Speaking to E! News at the event, Penn reminisced: “What I remember of her is she was incredibly quick to laugh,” and “She was really joyous. We all have our ups and downs, our lights and shadows, but she had this – I mean, she was mature, but she had this childlike, joyous laugh.”
He added: “It’s surreal. I hadn’t seen her in over a decade. So, you know, I can’t claim to have known her well, but yeah, really surreal. Really saddening.”
