A New York apartment building, a series of bizarre deaths and three amateur sleuths who couldn’t be more different: The US crime-comedy series “Only Murders in the Building” has become a global hit with this simple formula and a joke-a-minute script.
Since 2021, Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez have starred as podcasters Charles, Oliver, and Mabel, solving absurd murders — but only those that occur among their neighbours in the upscale Arconia apartment complex.
On September 9, the fifth season will premiere on Disney+. As hinted at the end of the previous season, this time the focus is on Lester, the easy-going, portly doorman who was found dead in the Arconia courtyard.
For TV veteran Charles, Broadway wannabe Oliver and their young neighbour Mabel, the news comes as a shock. Each of the trio has personal memories of Lester, who always seemed to be around.
Then, a severed finger is discovered in one of Oliver’s shrimp cocktails. Could the gruesome find belong to the late concierge? Their attempt to investigate at the open casket funeral leads to a scandal during the memorial service.
The award-winning whodunit comedy once again delves into the life of a side character, exploring their backstory in depth. Lester wasn’t always overweight, and he once had big dreams. Instead, he followed in the footsteps of his predecessor, becoming both a doorman and a beneficiary of the mafia.
By holding the door open for the right people at the right time, Lester’s friends rewarded him with cash. But did this arrangement ultimately cost him his life? Naturally, there are plenty of twists ahead. The trio uncovers a web of intrigue involving even billionaires.
This season features an impressive lineup of guest stars, including Meryl Streep, Renée Zellweger, Christoph Waltz and Dianne Wiest. “Only Murders in the Building” returns on September 9 with three episodes, followed by weekly releases of new episodes.
