According to a recent interview, the return of Sly Cooper by Sucker Punch won’t be happening any time soon.

With recent comments from Sony regarding their IP properties being used more and becoming more iconic, many old school fans immediately jumped to titles like Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper. You could say Spyro or Crash Bandicoot, but Sony openly doesn’t own rights to those anymore.

So the fan excitement carried over to a recent interview from YouTube channel MinnMax with Co-Creative Director of Sucker Punch, Nate Fox. When asked how excited the studio would be if they announced a new Sly Cooper title he replied “only about 10 percent of the studio would be excited.” He carried on further to note that time difference of several decades since the studio worked on the franchise is to blame for any lack of excitement by the team.

Sly Cooper has of course seen a re-release of the original games, along with an original Sly Cooper 4, since then but those were all produced by Sanzaru Games, which was recently acquired by Meta.

In 2022 Sucker Punch released a statement that they currently have no plans to return to either Sly Cooper or InFamous franchises. They have, of course, been hard at work making their latest game Ghost of Yotei, which without a doubt looks incredible by all means.

Could fan nostalgia and the studios unwillingness to return to these franchises possibly allow Sony to open the door for another studio to take on the reigns? Who knows, and who knows if that type of attempt would be welcomed by fans.
