Maureen McCormick was one of the most beloved television stars of the 1970s. Her Brady Bunch character, Marcia Brady, was the all-American teen queen that every girl wanted to be and every boy wanted to date.

But McCormick’s future husband knew nothing about her signature role when she first met him.

Speaking with People magazine in September 2025, the actress, 69, revealed that when she met her husband, Michael Cummings, in the early 1980s he had no clue who she was— and had never heard of the popular character she played on the classic ABC sitcom.

“Which was very refreshing for me, because [he had] no pre-conceived ideas about who I was,” McCormick shared. “So, it was really wonderful.”

In her 2008 memoir, Here’s the Story: Surviving Marcia Brady and Finding My True Voice, McCormick revealed that she met Cummings after hitting a low point in her life while she was a star on The Brady Bunch spinoff, The Brady Brides. She spotted Cummings while at a concert through her church and immediately knew he was her soulmate.

“I turned around and saw his guy behind me,” McCormick wrote in her book. “I’d never seen him before. He had dark hair, a great build, and chiseled features. I looked straight into his eyes and thought, ‘This is the man I’m going to marry.’”

She got to know Cummings through Bible studies at her church and ultimately opened up to him about her struggles with drug abuse after living her life in the spotlight. The couple wed in 1985 and had a daughter, Natalie, in 1989. McCormick relapsed on drugs early in the relationship, but Cummings stayed by her side.

“Michael said that he’d made a life-long commitment and decided he was going to work at it until it’s unworkable,” she wrote. “He thought child stardom had arrested my development, and in many ways, he was right,” she wrote.

McCormick has credited Cummings with saving her. During a 2008 appearance on CBS’ The Early Show, she told host Julie Chen she believed she was still alive because of Cummings. “I would say, yeah,” The Brady Bunch star confirmed.

In the new People interview, McCormick noted that she and her husband are able to “celebrate” their differences. “[We feel] very grateful and thankful to have found each other,” she added.
