Yorgos Lanthimos Directs Scarlett Johansson in Prada’s Newest Campaign

Morning breeze—not after 12 noon, not before 5 AM—the recorded barking of a medium-sized dog, and three drops of blood drawn at nighttime. These odd ingredients along with various others are what Scarlett Johansson aims to collect in the latest Prada campaign short film, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos and released today. All of which she gathers into her chosen vessel: the Prada Galleria bag.

The film, titled “Ritual Identities,” features an inquisitive cast of characters—each played by Johansson. We follow different versions of the lauded actor through an array of mysterious rituals, strange actions within archetypical settings of modern life, around New York City. Throughout each task, there’s an undercurrent of Lanthimos’ surreally stylized eccentricity.

“For this Prada campaign Lanthimos envisaged, I play a version of myself,” Johansson tells Bazaar, “I think the idea—the poetry—of that was that I was playing many people at the same time. The result portrays the duality that exists inside all of us. I think a lot of Yorgos’ work centers around that theme—duality, fractured identities. This was really an exploration, for him to continue in interrogating that idea.”

The annual campaigns celebrating Prada’s Galleria bag have become something of a rotating hub for creativity. Last year, Jonathan Glazer directed the campaign’s short film also starring Johansson. For 2025, the baton passes to five-time Academy Award-nominated director, producer and screenwriter Lanthimos, who wooed the fashion world with his 2023 film Poor Things. And said fashion world has once again brought two great minds together; this is the first time Johansson and Lanthimos have collaborated—and to great result.

“Yorgos himself wrote the monologue for this Prada campaign film, and there were so many different ways to interpret it,” says Johansson. “In the repetition of the monologue, with each take and different setups, you discover new meaning—in its abstraction, it becomes a changing, effervescent thing.”

But throughout all of this beautiful pandemonium, Prada’s Galleria is constant. First launched in 2007, the handbag has persisted through nearly two decades and embraced seasonal reinvention, becoming something of a signature for the Italian brand. The latest campaign underscores its versatility, depicting the Galleria as “a totem, a talisman, an amulet central to the ritual and the everyday performance of life itself, a vessel for magical change,” as the press release puts it. Whether it’s holding rainwater that drips from a non-blooming cherry tree or your wallet and keys, the Prada’s Galleria bag will always be there for you.
