On Thursday, September 18, the 78-year-old legendary talk show host spoke with The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg at The Atlantic Festival, and revealed he and the comedian, 57, had texted that morning.

“He’s sitting up in bed taking nourishment,” Letterman explained. “He’s going to be fine.”

However, the former Late Show host — who hosted the series from 1993 to 2015 before Stephen Colbert took over — expressed concern about the media landscape.

“We all see where this is going, correct? It’s managed media,” Letterman remarked.

“And it’s no good, it’s silly, it’s ridiculous, and you can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian,” he added. “That’s just not how this works.”

As the National Enquirer previously reported, Disney’s ABC told NPR and other outlets that “Jimmy Kimmel Live will be preempted indefinitely” on Wednesday, September 17, following remarks Kimmel made on Monday’s episode about Charlie Kirk’s murderer.

“The MAGA Gang (is) desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel stated. “In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving.”

Kirk was shot and killed on Wednesday, September 10, while speaking at Utah Valley University. He was 31 years old.

Last week, Kimmel penned a statement on Instagram, sharing his condolences.

“Instead of the angry finger-pointing, can we just for one day agree that it is horrible and monstrous to shoot another human?” he wrote on the platform. “On behalf of my family, we send love to the Kirks and to all the children, parents, and innocents who fall victim to senseless gun violence.”
