NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Days after Hollywood legend Robert Redford died, a woman is trying to find the New Mexicans who took part in a film that Redford produced and directed in the Land of Enchantment. She is using an old photo to do it.
New Mexico film community remembers actor Robert Redford
Redford’s biggest tie to New Mexico was his work on the 1988 film “The Milagro Beanfield War,” all shot in Truchas. “I think it opened the door for New Mexico to be a candidate for more film work. I had worked in a film prior to it, but it was very small,” said Victoria Plata, who worked with Redford as the coordinator for extras on the film.
All of those actors are from towns across northern New Mexico. “He really wanted to give it the flavor that John Nichols had given to the book, and the only way to do that was to film it here and to film it with local people,” said Plata.
Now, she is looking for those people to share a memento that not everyone got. “We took a photo, the still photographer took a photo for everyone to have. Unfortunately, I did not have phone numbers, and there were no such things as emails, and cell phones at the time,” said Plata.
Around 200 people are in the photo, including Redford. Plata hopes those in it will reach out for a copy. The film left an impression on many people, including Plata and her daughter, who both appeared in the film. “Bob made friends with those people. They adored him. They really loved working on this film. It was probably the highlight, as it is for me, of their lives,” said Plata.
Extras who are in the photo or their family members are encouraged to reach out to Victoria Plata; her email is [email protected].
