This Week in the Minors: Quad Cities throws a no-hitter

The Royals were playing catch up all day in their final home game of the 2025 campaign, and they just couldn’t get over the hump as they dropped the series finale 8-5 against the Blue Jays. The Royals took 2 of 3 from Toronto in both series’ this season, however.

The Blue Jays jumped Michael Wacha for a pair of three run innings, the first one coming in the second. A leadoff walk, a one out single got things started. A wild pitch got the runners to second and third, before an RBI single and a suicide squeeze bunt put them up 2-0. George Springer hit a 2 out double to cap the rally.

The Royals would get two runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning, getting a two out, two run single from catcher Carter Jensen, who continues to impress late in the season. John Rave would ground out with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Toronto came right back and scored three runs in the top of the 5th inning. A one out, two run double from Vlad Guerrero Jr. put the Jays up 5-2, he scored on an RBI double from Addison Barger. Wacha would finish the inning. His final line was five innings, eight hits, six runs (all earned), one walk and four strikeouts.

Again though, the Royals battled right back and got two runs in the bottom half of the 5th inning, Maikel Garcia and Salvador Perez would hit RBI singles, scoring Mike Yastrzemski and Bobby Witt Jr., both of whom reached on singles as well. The RBI for the Captain was historical.

Jac Caglianone hit his first career MLB triple and scored on an RBI single from Randal Grichuk to cut it to 6-5 in the bottom of the 6th inning. Unfortunately, that’s as close as the Royals would get. Toronto scored two more runs in the 8th off Angel Zerpa and John Schreiber to push it out to 8-5. That would be the final score.

The Blue Jays won their 90th game and clinched a playoff berth with the win. They haven’t clinched the AL East divisional crown yet but are in good shape to do so. The Blue Jays have now made the playoffs in three of the last four seasons.

As for the Royals, they are back to .500 on the season, at 78-78. They travel out to California for three with the Angels and A’s starting on Tuesday. Hopefully, the boys in blue are able to finish .500 or better to finish the season.
