‘South Park’ Co-Creator Spills the Real Reason Why Latest Episode Was Delayed

Rest assured, South Park fans, the beloved Comedy Central animated series isn’t going anywhere. After an episode of the show, which streams on Paramount+, that was supposed to air on September 17 got pushed to September 24, co-creator Matt Stone insisted the delay was simply due to time constraints.

“No one pulled the episode, no one censored us, and you know we’d say so if true,” Stone explained in an interview with The Denver Post on September 21. “We just didn’t get it done. When you always cut it close, sometimes you mess up. That’s the price of being a procrastinator.”

The interview echoes the sentiments in their original September 17th post apologizing for having to push the episode back. “Apparently when you do everything at the last minute, sometimes you don’t get it done,” said the statement. “This one’s on us. We didn’t get it done in time. Thanks to Comedy Central and South Park fans for being so understanding. Tune in next week!”

Despite the transparency, passionate viewers feared the delay could be because of censorship — or even that the show would be cancelled — amid political turmoil. “Blink twice if they’re silencing you, Matt and Trey,” said one person in the comments, while another added, “It was definitely finished. Just not allowed to air.” A third wrote, “They made them take the fall for not being done on time when it was probably paramount waiting to see the reaction of the Jimmy Kimmel ban.”

Many fans linked the delay to recent tensions in the comedy space, including The Late Show with Stephen Colbert‘s cancellation and Jimmy Kimmel Live‘s “indefinite” hiatus as a result of comments the late-night show host made about Charlie Kirk following his shooting death on September 10.

Paramount also removed an episode of South Parkthat featured character Cartman spoofing Kirk from its rerun schedule following his death, though it still remains on the streaming platform. Kirk’s producer and friend, Andrew Kolvet, insisted the late political commentator “loved that he was featured in South Park,” and “would want the episode back up.”

Paramount signed a staggering $1.5 billion streaming deal with Parker and Stone in 2025, which also extended their production deal through 2030 and guaranteed their Park County propduction company a minimum of $250 million a year to produce new South Park episodes. Considering the network’s massive investment and previous knowledge of Stone and Parker’s controversial nature, it is unlikely they’d face cancellation.
