A beloved British period drama has found a new streaming home in the UK.
Released in 1970, The Railway Children is now available to stream on BBC iPlayer after it aired on BBC Two at the weekend.
The film from writer-director Lionel Jeffries adapts the 1906 novel of the same name by E. Nesbit.
Starring Call the Midwife’s Jenny Agutter and Doctor Who’s Bernard Cribbins, the movie follows three young siblings leaving London for Yorkshire with their mother when their father is arrested on suspicion of being a spy.
The family’s new rundown house is near Oakworth railway station, which becomes a regular stop for the Waterbury kids as they explore their new surroundings.

Bobbie (Agutter), Phyllis (Sally Thomsett) and Peter (Gary Warren) befriend the station porter, Albert Perks (Cribbins), and several passengers as they remain in the dark about their dad’s conviction.
The Railway Children boasts a perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, with The Guardian calling it “a wonderful piece of family entertainment”.
The film was followed by a sequel released in 2022 and titled The Railway Children Return.
Directed by Morgan Matthews and written by Danny Brocklehurst, the film is set in 1944 and sees Agutter reprise her role as Bobbie.

The follow-up focuses on Lily (Beau Gadsdon), Patty (Eden Hamilton) and Ted Watts (Zac Cudby), three siblings evacuated from Manchester to Oakworth during World War II.
Complying with the request of not splitting them up, Bobbie steps in and welcomes them to the home she shares with her daughter, school headmistress Annie (Sheridan Smith), and her 13-year-old son Thomas (Austin Haynes).
The film has a milder Rotten Tomatoes score compared to the original, currently sitting at a critics rating of 57% out of 49 reviews.
