The tornado that was Wicked fever is set to cause even more bedlam later this year, when the long-awaited sequel arrives in cinemas.
Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will reprise their roles as Elphaba and Glinda in the new film Wicked For Good, which will bring the events of the original Broadway musical’s second half to the big screen.
And while the first Wicked movie was praised for staying mostly true to the source material, it’s already well-documented that Wicked For Good will be making more sizeable changes.
In addition to new songs for both Cynthia and Ariana, not to mention a major tweak to the way Nessarose’s story arc plays out, it’s already been revealed that Dorothy will also be introduced in Wicked For Good.
While the iconic Wizard Of Oz character is repeatedly referred to off-stage in the Wicked musical on both Broadway and the West End, she’s never actually seen.
However, it was teased last year that the character will seemingly have a bigger role to play in Wicked For Good, which Cynthia and Ariana have now lifted the lid on during an interview with Empire.

The magazine has clarified that Dorothy is “not exactly” a “character in the film”, and will instead be seen “largely from a distance, or from behind”, which Cynthia said was a “wonderful” approach “because then everyone gets to keep the Dorothy that they know” from other Wizard Of Oz adaptations.
Ariana also shared: “I love the little bit of shadiness that Glinda has towards Dorothy. There’s a lot going on, and she doesn’t really have time to deal with this.
“She could have told her to take the Emerald City train! But she didn’t. That’s a little shady, Glinda!”
The Thank U, Next singer added: “I leaned all the way into Glinda sort of having an eye roll for Dorothy whenever she has to deal with her.”

It was previously hinted that Matilda The Musical star Alisha Weir will portray Dorothy in Wicked For Good, though this remains unconfirmed for the time being.
Judy Garland was, of course, the first person to play Dorothy on screen in the classic 1939 film The Wizard Of Oz, with Fairuza Balk revisiting the character in Disney’s unofficial sequel Return To Oz.
The 1978 movie musical The Wiz saw Diana Ross playing Dorothy, while Always On Time singer Ashanti put a new spin on the character in the oft-overlooked TV special The Muppets’ Wizard Of Oz in 2005.
Wicked: For Good is set to hit UK cinemas on 21 November 2025.
