Michael J. Fox is returning to the small screen and fans have plenty to celebrate.
The beloved actor will reprise his role in Season 4 of Apple TV+’s hit comedy Shrinking, continuing a remarkable career that has inspired audiences for decades. Fox’s return is especially meaningful considering his journey with Parkinson’s disease. After being diagnosed in 1991 at age 29, the actor was told he might only have another 10 years of performing before the disease made acting too difficult. More than three decades later, Fox is still proving those expectations wrong.
The Emmy and Golden Globe winner first appeared in Season 3 of Shrinking, portraying a character with Parkinson’s who forms a connection with Harrison Ford’s character, Dr. Paul Rhoades, who is also living with the disease. The storyline marked a personal milestone for Fox, as it was the first time he portrayed someone with Parkinson’s interacting with another character experiencing the condition.
In a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter, Fox praised Ford for bringing authenticity and compassion to the role. “He was happy that I was sharing my experience with him as a character and helping him do what he needed to do,” Fox said of his experience working with Ford.
Although Fox announced in 2020 that he was stepping back from acting due to challenges caused by Parkinson’s symptoms, he later returned to performing and says acting continues to bring meaning and joy to his life.“I’m not retired from acting,” Fox shared.
Outside of Hollywood, Fox has become one of the most influential advocates for Parkinson’s research. In 2000, he founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation, which has helped fund billions of dollars in research while working toward better treatments and a cure.
