Oakland First Fridays seeks sponsors as funding challenges force entertainment cuts

Between Nexstar and Sinclair — the two media conglomerates that own a combined 66 affiliate television stations — Sinclair has already announced that they do not plan to broadcast Jimmy Kimmel Live! after Disney reinstated the show. Last week, Kimmel’s show was suspended “indefinitely” after the host’s comments about the death of the conservative commentator Charlie Kirk during his monologue.

In a statement published to X, Sinclair wrote, “Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming. Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! is preparing to make its return to television tonight, and according to celebrity.land, he plans to address the controversy in his monologue.

Kimmel’s show was pulled from the air “indefinitely” last week due to comments the host made about the death of the conservative political commentator. “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang trying to characterize this kid who killed Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them,” Kimmel said during his monologue. He also poked fun at the President by sharing a clip of Trump being asked about Kirk’s death, but after answering, he directed the press to the construction being done for the White House’s new ballroom.

The late-night talk show was announced to be returning on Monday, following an uproar from entertainment unions, as well as hundreds of actors who signed an open letter released by the American Civil Liberties Union. Some of the signees include: Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Jane Fonda, Selena Gomez, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Not too soon after, Disney announced that the show would return this week and issued a statement that reads:

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country.

It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live! airs a new episode this Tuesday, September 23, on ABC.
