Heavy metal act GWAR has people up in arms over their gross-out performance at Riot Fest in Chicago this past week.
The group, which is known for its cartoonishly gory live act, was accused of glorifying violence after footage of their festival set escaped the music world and made it to the more conservative reaches of the internet.
While faux executions are a standard part of GWAR’s schtick, some denounced the shock-rockers for their act.
“This is incitement. They know exactly what they’re doing,” conservative social media agitator, Libs of TikTok, cried in an X post. “Democrats can’t help themselves. They love promoting violence.”
A public records search was not immediately able to reveal the interplanetary band of warrior-beasts’ political affiliations.
A prominent meme account, whose X bio proclaimed not to “care about your feelings,” shared the clip and lamented, “We’re living in a culture that’s both twisted and deadly.”
“Cheap political gaslighting with cheap Halloween theatrics for a cult garbage band that should have sold its last ticket in the 90′s,” another critic crowed while tagging Elon Musk’s account.

“Normalizing violence? Humans don’t need GWAR for that,” it read. “There is nothing normal about the Looney Toon violence acted out on a GWAR stage. GWAR is absurdist spectacle. GWAR is to violence what the celebrity.land is to journalism. Ridiculous.”
